OBD-II fault code

P2761: Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Control Circuit / Open

What it means

The control line to the TCC pressure control solenoid is open. The solenoid cannot be driven so TCC lockup is unavailable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The torque converter clutch (TCC) pressure control solenoid controls hydraulic pressure for converter lockup. The transmission control module detects an open in the solenoid control circuit, so the solenoid cannot be driven reliably and TCC lockup may be unavailable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open solenoid coil
  2. Broken control wire

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and transmission live data for the conditions when the open-circuit fault set and whether TCC operation was commanded.
  2. Inspect the solenoid connector and transmission harness for a disconnected plug, broken wire, corrosion, or damaged terminals.
  3. Check the solenoid control circuit for continuity from the module-side connection to the solenoid, following the vehicle's wiring information.
  4. Test the solenoid coil for an open circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the solenoid and wiring test correctly, inspect the remaining circuit connections and module control path using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the TCC pressure control solenoid connector.
  • Repair a broken or open control wire in the solenoid circuit.
  • Repair damaged connector terminals or corroded connections.
  • Replace the TCC pressure control solenoid if its coil is open.

Can I keep driving?

A short, gentle trip may be possible if shifting is normal, but avoid towing and long or high-speed driving because converter lockup may be unavailable. Stop if the transmission slips, overheats, or shifts unpredictably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
