What it means
The control module monitors the electrical circuit for engine sound control B, which drives a sound generator. It sets this code when it detects an open circuit that prevents the generator from being driven as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Engine sound control B is an electrical output circuit that drives one channel of the vehicle's sound generator. The module monitors that circuit and sets P26EC when it detects an open path, so channel B cannot be driven as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open output stage in the sound amplifier
- Broken control wire to amplifier
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may be on
- Engine sound enhancement may be reduced or absent
- No change in normal engine operation may be noticeable
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check whether P26EC returns after clearing it, since an intermittent open may not be present continuously.
- Inspect the sound generator B amplifier connector and harness for a disconnected plug, broken wire, damaged insulation, or backed-out pin.
- Check continuity through the B control wire and its connectors with power isolated as specified by the manufacturer.
- Check the amplifier's power and ground supplies, then test its B output circuit using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If wiring and amplifier checks pass, test the sound generator B load and any associated feedback circuit for an open.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the sound generator B connector and secure any loose harness.
- Repair a broken B control wire or damaged connector terminal.
- Restore a poor amplifier power or ground connection.
- Replace the amplifier if its B output stage is confirmed open.
Can I keep driving?
P26EC usually affects the enhanced engine sound, not normal engine operation, so driving is generally possible if the vehicle otherwise behaves normally. The B sound channel may remain silent; stop if other electrical or powertrain warnings appear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
