OBD-II fault code

P26EF: Engine Sound Control B Circuit Performance

What it means

The sound generator B circuit responds but the resulting acoustic feedback is not as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Engine sound control B drives a sound generator channel and may use feedback to check the resulting sound. P26EF sets when the circuit responds but the acoustic result does not match what the module expects, such as distorted or inconsistent output.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Speaker cone damaged or coil shorted
  2. Feedback microphone drifts

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may be on
  • Engine sound enhancement may sound distorted, too loud, or inconsistent
  • No change in normal engine operation may be noticeable

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and any available sound-control live data to determine when the B-channel performance fault occurs.
  2. Listen for distortion or inconsistent output from the B sound generator and compare it with other sound channels if available.
  3. Inspect the B speaker or sound generator for physical damage, loose mounting, blocked openings, or a disconnected connector.
  4. Check B-channel wiring and connectors for damage, then test the speaker load and amplifier output using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the output hardware passes, check the feedback microphone, its wiring, and reported signal for drift or an implausible reading.

Common fixes

  • Secure the sound generator and reconnect or repair its connector.
  • Repair damaged B-channel wiring.
  • Replace the B speaker or sound generator if its cone or coil is damaged.
  • Replace or recalibrate the feedback microphone if testing confirms its signal has drifted.

Can I keep driving?

P26EF usually affects the enhanced engine sound and does not change normal engine operation, so driving is generally safe if the vehicle behaves normally. The B channel may sound distorted, too loud, or inconsistent until repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
