OBD-II fault code

P26DD: Engine Sound Control A Circuit High

What it means

Voltage on the sound generator A control line is above the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Engine Sound Control A is the vehicle's first designated sound-generation channel, used in equipped vehicles for a simulated engine sound or an acoustic warning. The module monitors its control-line voltage; this code sets when voltage is above the expected range, which can indicate a wire shorted to battery voltage or an open amplifier input and may disrupt the sound.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to B+
  2. Amplifier input stage open
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may be on
  • Pedestrian warning sound or simulated engine sound may be absent or abnormal

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live fault status to confirm the high reading is on Engine Sound Control A, then note whether its sound is absent or abnormal.
  2. Inspect the channel A control harness and amplifier connector for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or contact with a battery-voltage wire.
  3. Monitor the control signal while commanding channel A and gently moving the harness to look for voltage changes.
  4. Test the control wire for a short to battery voltage and check connector continuity using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If the harness and connectors are sound, test the amplifier input stage for an open circuit against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the channel A connector terminals.
  • Repair a control wire shorted to battery voltage.
  • Replace damaged connector terminals or wiring with an intermittent or open connection.
  • Replace the amplifier if its channel A input stage is confirmed open.

Can I keep driving?

If channel A supplies an EV or hybrid pedestrian warning, avoid relying on the vehicle to alert people nearby and arrange prompt repair. If it only generates simulated engine sound, normal driving is generally unaffected.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
