OBD-II fault code

P26DE: Engine Sound Control A Circuit Performance

What it means

The sound generator A circuit responds to commands but the resulting acoustic feedback is not as expected. Speaker damage or feedback path noise.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Engine Sound Control A is the vehicle's first designated sound-generation channel, which creates a simulated engine sound or acoustic warning in equipped vehicles. The module checks whether the channel's output and feedback match the command; this code sets when the channel responds but the resulting sound or feedback is outside the expected performance range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Speaker cone damaged or coil shorted
  2. Feedback microphone drifts

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may be on
  • Pedestrian warning or simulated engine sound may be distorted, intermittent, or too quiet

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and sound-system fault details, then operate channel A to identify whether its output is distorted, intermittent, or too quiet.
  2. Inspect the channel A sound unit or speaker and its wiring for damage, loose mounting, debris, or a poor connector fit.
  3. Use a scan tool to command channel A and compare its requested output with the sound and feedback readings, if available.
  4. Check the feedback microphone and its wiring for damage, poor connections, or noise that could distort the module's feedback.
  5. Test the speaker and feedback path against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a damaged speaker from a drifting microphone.

Common fixes

  • Secure loose connectors and wiring at the channel A speaker and feedback microphone.
  • Remove debris or correct mounting issues affecting the channel A speaker.
  • Replace a damaged speaker whose cone or coil fails testing.
  • Replace or recalibrate the feedback microphone if it fails the manufacturer's checks.

Can I keep driving?

If the sound is an EV or hybrid pedestrian warning, do not rely on it to alert people nearby until repaired. If it is only simulated engine sound, driving is generally unaffected, but a worsening fault may make the output unpredictable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
