OBD-II fault code

P2286: Injector Control Pressure Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The injector control pressure sensor circuit signal is higher than the control module expects. This can result from a circuit or sensor fault; the code alone does not establish the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The injector control pressure sensor reports pressure to the module on engines equipped with this system. P2286 sets when the sensor signal is higher than expected, which may result from a signal short to supply, an open ground, or a sensor or connector fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to supply
  2. Open ground wire
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may illuminate
  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Rough running or stalling
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live injector control pressure readings to confirm the signal is high during the fault.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, pushed-back pins, damaged insulation, or a wire contacting a power source.
  3. Check the sensor ground circuit for an open or poor connection using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Test the signal wire for a short to supply and check connector continuity and contact quality.
  5. If the wiring and ground are sound, test the injector control pressure sensor against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure a loose sensor connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded terminals and damaged seals.
  • Repair an open injector control pressure sensor ground wire.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to supply voltage.
  • Replace the sensor if it still produces an out-of-range high signal with a verified circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the engine stalls, runs roughly, or loses power, since injector control may be unreliable. If symptoms are mild, keep trips short and avoid heavy loads until the high signal cause is found.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
