OBD-II fault code

P2288: Injector Control Pressure Too High

What it means

The injector control pressure is higher than the expected limit. The code does not by itself identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The injector control pressure system supplies and regulates the pressure needed by the injection system; some engines use high-pressure engine oil for this function. The control module compares the reported pressure with its operating limit and sets P2288 when pressure is too high while the engine is running.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injector-control pressure regulator stuck or not regulating correctly
  2. Pressure-control valve or solenoid fault
  3. Pressure sensor or wiring reporting an incorrect value
  4. High-pressure oil system fault, where fitted

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may illuminate
  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Rough running or stalling
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and reported injector control pressure in live data during cranking and running to confirm when the pressure exceeds its limit.
  2. Check for related pressure-sensor, regulator, or oil-system codes that could point to a shared cause.
  3. Inspect the pressure sensor connector and wiring for damage or a poor connection that could falsely report high pressure.
  4. Check whether the regulator or control-valve circuit responds to commands using the vehicle's supported scan-tool functions.
  5. If the sensor signal is credible, test the pressure regulator or control valve and, where fitted, the high-pressure oil system against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged pressure-sensor connection or wiring.
  • Replace a pressure sensor that reports incorrectly when tested against the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair or replace a regulator or control valve that fails to regulate pressure.
  • Repair a verified fault in the high-pressure oil system, where fitted.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the engine is stalling, has reduced power, or is hard to start; the module may limit power and the engine could stop unexpectedly. Arrange diagnosis before relying on the vehicle.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
