OBD-II fault code

P2284: Injector Control Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The injector control pressure sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected under the monitored conditions. The code alone does not identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The injector control pressure sensor measures pressure used by the injector control system on equipped engines. P2284 sets when the module sees a reading outside the expected range or a response that does not match operating conditions; pressure problems or sensor drift can cause this even if the circuit is electrically connected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. ICP sensor drift
  2. Leak in high-pressure oil system
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may illuminate
  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Rough running or stalling
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and compare injector control pressure readings during cranking, idle, and the conditions that set the code.
  2. Inspect the injector control pressure sensor connector and wiring for damage or poor contact that could distort its reading.
  3. Compare the sensor signal with the manufacturer's specification and check whether it responds consistently as operating conditions change.
  4. If the sensor circuit is sound, check the high-pressure oil system for leaks or other pressure loss using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. Test the sensor for drift or an aged response and replace it only if readings fail the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged sensor connector or wiring that causes an inaccurate pressure signal.
  • Repair a confirmed leak in the high-pressure oil system.
  • Replace a drifting injector control pressure sensor that fails testing.
  • Correct another confirmed pressure-system fault identified during diagnosis.

Can I keep driving?

Because this fault can trigger reduced power and hard starting, avoid long trips or demanding driving; stop if the engine stalls or loses substantial power. Continued operation with an actual pressure problem can worsen running issues.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
