OBD-II fault code

P2131: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch F Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The "E" channel of the pedal/throttle sensor produces electrically valid values that do not match other channels or the operating window.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Throttle or accelerator-pedal position channel F provides one of the module's position readings, which it compares with other channels and the expected operating range. P2131 sets when the F signal is electrically present but its values do not track properly or fall outside the expected relationship as the pedal or throttle moves.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Correlation with tracks D/F lost
  2. Track E worn at common angle
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and graph F alongside the other position channels to locate where the readings stop agreeing.
  2. Inspect the F sensor connector, mounting, and nearby wiring for looseness or damage that could alter the signal.
  3. Move the pedal or throttle gradually through its range while watching live F data for sticking, lag, dead spots, or a mismatch with the other channels.
  4. Check F-circuit terminal contact and wiring continuity, paying attention to sections that flex or show corrosion.
  5. If the circuit is sound, test the F sensor track across its operating range against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose F-channel connector or sensor mounting.
  • Clean or repair corroded terminals and poor F-circuit connections.
  • Repair damaged F-channel wiring that causes signal resistance or interruption.
  • Replace the pedal or throttle position sensor assembly if the F track has dead spots or remains out of range.

Can I keep driving?

A mismatch in F feedback can cause hesitation, reduced throttle, or unpredictable response. Avoid overtaking and hard acceleration until repaired, and stop safely if throttle control becomes erratic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
