OBD-II fault code

P2133: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch F Circuit High

What it means

The "E" channel signal is above the upper threshold — usually a short to positive or an open ground.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The E channel is one of the position signals used by the electronic throttle or accelerator pedal system to report movement to the control module. P2133 sets when that channel rises above its expected range, which can result from a short to positive voltage, a missing sensor ground, or poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to positive
  2. Sensor ground open
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare E-channel live data with the other position channels while slowly moving the pedal or throttle as appropriate; note when E rises above range.
  2. With the ignition off, inspect the E-channel wiring and connectors at the relevant pedal or throttle sensor for chafing against powered wires, corrosion, loose pins, or a disconnected plug.
  3. Check the E signal wire for an unintended short to voltage and verify continuity of the sensor ground, using the wiring diagram.
  4. Measure sensor power, ground, and E signal at the sensor and control-module connector while operating it; compare readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring and connections test correctly, assess the position sensor and control-module input using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair a damaged or open sensor ground wire.
  • Repair the E-channel wire if it is shorted to a powered circuit.
  • Replace the faulty pedal or throttle position sensor assembly if its E output is out of specification.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if throttle response is reduced or unpredictable; the vehicle may limit power or respond inconsistently. If it still responds normally, make only a short, cautious trip for diagnosis, as the fault can worsen and compromise throttle control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
