OBD-II fault code

P0121: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor A Range/Performance

What it means

The throttle position sensor (TPS) signal does not match the expected range for the commanded pedal position. On drive-by-wire vehicles, two redundant sensors are compared; a divergence between them or implausible motion triggers this code.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Throttle or pedal position sensor A provides a changing position signal that the module checks against expected movement and, on some electronic throttle systems, against a redundant sensor. P0121 sets when the A signal is within electrical limits but its range or behavior does not match what the module expects.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. TPS contact track worn (older potentiometer-type sensors)
  2. Carbon buildup blocking throttle plate
  3. Corroded TPS connector

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and graph live sensor A readings while slowly operating the pedal or throttle, looking for jumps, dead spots, or movement that does not track the command.
  2. Compare sensor A with the paired position sensor and commanded throttle data to identify where their responses diverge.
  3. Inspect the throttle body for carbon buildup or a plate that does not move freely, following the vehicle's service precautions.
  4. Check the TPS connector and wiring for corrosion, poor contact, or damage that could distort the signal.
  5. Test sensor operation and circuit continuity against the manufacturer's specification before replacing parts.

Common fixes

  • Clean the throttle body if deposits are obstructing plate movement, using the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Clean and secure a corroded or loose TPS connector.
  • Repair damaged sensor wiring or poor connections.
  • Replace the position sensor or throttle body assembly if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may hesitate, surge, or limit throttle response, so avoid overtaking and high-speed driving. If acceleration becomes difficult to control or limp mode engages, stop somewhere safe and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
