OBD-II fault code

P2121: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch D Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The "C" channel of the throttle or pedal sensor produces an electrically valid signal that does not match the other channels or the operating point.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Circuit D is one of the redundant position signals from the throttle or accelerator pedal sensor assembly. P2121 sets when the D reading is electrically plausible but falls outside the expected range or no longer tracks correctly with the other channels as the pedal or throttle moves.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor track C worn
  2. Correlation with tracks A/B lost
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and watch all available pedal or throttle position channels on a scan tool to see when D diverges from the other readings.
  2. Inspect the sensor assembly and circuit D connector for looseness, corrosion, contamination, or harness strain that could disturb the D track.
  3. Move the pedal or throttle gradually while checking for a smooth, consistent change in D data and compare its relationship with the other channels using vehicle service information.
  4. Check circuit D wiring, sensor supply, and ground for damage or voltage drop, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit is sound, test the position sensor assembly for a worn D track or calibration issue using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure the sensor connector and correct poor terminal contact.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a faulty sensor ground or supply affecting the D reading.
  • Replace the pedal or throttle position sensor assembly if its D track is worn or out of correlation.
  • Perform the specified calibration or relearn after a sensor repair when the vehicle requires it.

Can I keep driving?

A D-channel mismatch can cause hesitation or restricted throttle response, and the vehicle may reduce power. Avoid journeys that depend on reliable acceleration, and stop if the readings are accompanied by unpredictable throttle behavior.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
