What it means
The generator phase U current sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator’s phase U current sensor measures current in the U phase of the hybrid motor-generator. The hybrid control module sets P0E01 when the phase U signal is electrically present but its value or response does not match the expected range, which can happen if the sensor offset has drifted or magnetic interference affects it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor offset drifted
- Magnetic offset
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Hybrid/EV system warning light on
- Reduced power or altered hybrid operation
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare phase U current readings with phases V and any other available generator phase data under the same operating conditions.
- Check whether the fault occurs at zero or low generator current, where a phase U sensor offset may be easiest to identify.
- Inspect the phase U sensor and nearby wiring for damage, loose mounting, or sources of magnetic interference identified by the vehicle service information.
- Check the phase U sensor connector and wiring for poor contacts or electrical faults that could distort the reading.
- If the circuit is intact, test phase U sensor offset and response using the manufacturer’s procedure to determine whether it is outside calibration.
Common fixes
- Correct a loose phase U sensor connection or damaged wiring affecting its signal.
- Remove or correct a confirmed source of magnetic interference near the phase U sensor, following service information.
- Replace the phase U current sensor if its offset or response fails the manufacturer’s test.
- Clear the code and confirm phase U readings track expected generator operation.
Can I keep driving?
Reduced power or altered hybrid operation can occur, so drive gently and avoid situations requiring strong acceleration. If a hybrid system warning escalates or the vehicle limits power substantially, stop safely and seek assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
