OBD-II fault code

P0D5A: Proximity Detection Circuit A Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The proximity detection circuit A (SAE J1772 PD signal) reports a circuit a intermittent/erratic condition. Charging cable plug detection impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Proximity detection circuit A carries the J1772 plug-presence signal from the charge inlet to the vehicle’s charging controls. The module sets P0D5A when that signal changes unpredictably, often because the connector or wiring makes intermittent contact, so charging can start and stop.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Plug not seated firmly
  2. Vibration affects contact
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Charging system warning light may come on
  • Vehicle may intermittently recognize a connected charging plug
  • Charging may start and stop unexpectedly

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and monitor live plug status while gently checking whether normal connector movement coincides with signal changes.
  2. Inspect that the charging plug seats firmly and examine the inlet contacts for wear, looseness, contamination, or damage.
  3. Inspect circuit A wiring and connectors near the inlet for loose terminals, chafing, or vibration-related movement.
  4. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, test circuit A continuity while checking for intermittent opens or shorts using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the connector and wiring stay stable, test the proximity-detection element and module input under the manufacturer's diagnostic conditions.

Common fixes

  • Seat the charging plug fully and check for a loose or damaged inlet.
  • Clean or repair worn, loose, or corroded inlet contacts.
  • Secure or repair circuit A wiring and connector terminals that lose contact with movement.
  • Replace a failed proximity-detection element if the signal remains intermittent with stable wiring.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may cut in and out, so confirm it remains active before leaving the vehicle. Driving is generally unaffected by plug detection itself, but do not count on the expected range until charging is verified.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
