OBD-II fault code

P0D58: Proximity Detection Circuit A Low

What it means

The proximity detection circuit A (SAE J1772 PD signal) reports a circuit a low condition. Charging cable plug detection impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Proximity detection circuit A carries the J1772 plug-detection signal from the inlet to the charging controls. P0D58 sets when the signal is lower than expected, which can happen if the wire is shorted to ground or the inlet contacts are damaged, and the vehicle may fail to recognize the plug.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire shorted to ground
  2. Plug seated forcefully

Symptoms

  • Charging system warning light may come on
  • Vehicle may not recognize that a charging plug is connected
  • Charging may not start

How to diagnose it

  1. Check live plug-status data while connecting the cable and confirm whether circuit A stays low instead of changing with plug position.
  2. Inspect the inlet and cable connector for bent, damaged, contaminated, or forcefully seated contacts.
  3. Inspect circuit A wiring for pinched insulation, chafing, or contact with ground, especially near the inlet.
  4. With the vehicle safely powered down as specified by the manufacturer, test circuit A for a short to ground and check connector continuity.
  5. If the circuit is not shorted, compare the proximity signal and charging-control input with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Correct an improperly seated or damaged charging connector and inspect for inlet damage.
  • Repair circuit A wiring shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair damaged inlet contacts and connector terminals.
  • Replace a failed proximity-detection element or repair the charging-control input if testing identifies it.

Can I keep driving?

The main concern is that charging may not start because the vehicle cannot confirm the plug is connected. Avoid forcing the connector, and verify charging has begun before relying on the vehicle's range.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
