What it means
The proximity detection circuit A (SAE J1772 PD signal) reports a circuit a range/performance condition. Charging cable plug detection impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Proximity detection circuit A conveys the J1772 connector’s plug-detection state to the vehicle. P0D57 means the circuit response is outside its expected range or does not behave as expected, so the vehicle may recognize the plug inconsistently even though the signal is present.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Contact resistance drifted
- High-resistance contact
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Charging system warning light may come on
- Vehicle may inconsistently recognize a connected charging plug
- Charging may be delayed or unavailable
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live plug-status data while connecting the cable to see whether circuit A changes cleanly between unplugged and plugged states.
- Inspect the charge inlet and connector contacts for contamination, corrosion, wear, or a loose fit that could add resistance.
- Check circuit A wiring and terminals for looseness, corrosion, or high-resistance connections.
- Measure the circuit response under the manufacturer's specified conditions and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the inlet and wiring are within specification, test the proximity-detection element and charging-control input for calibration drift or a fault.
Common fixes
- Clean the inlet and connector contacts with an approved method.
- Repair high-resistance or loose circuit A terminals and wiring.
- Replace a worn or damaged charge inlet or proximity-detection element if it fails the specified test.
- Repair the charging-control input if the signal at the module remains out of range with a sound circuit.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may drive normally, but plug detection can delay or prevent charging. Confirm the vehicle recognizes the connector and begins charging before leaving it unattended.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
