What it means
The charger’s hybrid/EV battery output power is outside the expected range. The code does not by itself establish a battery-pack imbalance.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The onboard charger converts external charging power into power for the hybrid or EV battery. The control module compares commanded and measured battery-side output power and sets P0D5C when charger output is outside the expected range; this code alone does not establish that the battery pack is imbalanced.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Charger or power-control fault
- Wiring or connection fault
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live charger output power to determine whether the fault appears at charge start, under load, or throughout charging.
- Inspect the charger and battery-side accessible connectors and wiring for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or other visible faults, following high-voltage safety procedures.
- Check whether commanded output power differs from measured output and compare related charging data with the manufacturer's specifications.
- Test the charger output wiring and connections using the manufacturer's procedure to identify resistance or control-signal problems.
- If the connections pass, diagnose the charger and power-control unit with the manufacturer's prescribed tests before considering battery-pack diagnosis.
Common fixes
- Repair loose, corroded, or damaged charger output connections.
- Repair wiring or control-circuit faults affecting battery-side output power.
- Replace or repair the onboard charger if its output is outside specification.
- Repair the power-control unit if it commands or regulates output incorrectly.
Can I keep driving?
Reduced power or limp mode may occur, and charging can be slow or unavailable. Limit driving if power is reduced, and do not assume the battery pack is the cause based on this code alone.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
