OBD-II fault code

P0D5B: Battery Charger 14 Volt Output Power Performance

What it means

The 14 volt output power does not match the commanded value within tolerance. Charger characteristic drifted or load mismatch.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The onboard charger’s 14-volt output supports the vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system during charging. The control module compares the actual output power with the commanded value and sets P0D5B when the output falls outside the expected performance range, including when the regulator drifts or the load does not match expectations.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Output regulator drifted
  2. Load mismatch

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and charger status to identify when the 14-volt output fault occurred and whether charging was interrupted.
  2. Inspect accessible low-voltage charging connections and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage that could affect the output load.
  3. Check live commanded and measured 14-volt output power with a scan tool under the manufacturer's specified conditions.
  4. Verify the low-voltage system load and related connections against the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to rule out a load mismatch.
  5. If wiring and load are correct, test the charger output regulator and control circuitry to the manufacturer's specifications.

Common fixes

  • Repair loose or corroded 14-volt output connections.
  • Correct a wiring or low-voltage load issue identified by testing.
  • Repair or replace the charger output regulator if it does not meet specification.
  • Repair the charger control unit if its output command or monitoring circuit is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may be slow or interrupted, and reduced-power operation may occur. Avoid depending on the vehicle for a long trip until the 14-volt output and charging status are confirmed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
