What it means
The proximity detection circuit A (SAE J1772 PD signal) reports a circuit a high condition. Charging cable plug detection impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Proximity detection circuit A tells the vehicle whether a J1772 connector is present. P0D59 sets when that signal is higher than expected, such as from a short to a higher-voltage circuit or an open pull-down path, and plug status may be misread.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to higher voltage
- Pull-down resistor open
Symptoms
- Charging system warning light may come on
- Vehicle may not recognize charging plug status correctly
- Charging may not start or may be interrupted
How to diagnose it
- Check live plug-status data with the connector both removed and inserted to see whether circuit A remains high or fails to change state.
- Inspect the inlet and connector for damaged terminals, contamination, or a loose connection that could leave the signal path open.
- Inspect circuit A wiring for damage or contact with a higher-voltage wire.
- With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, test circuit A for a short to power and check the pull-down path and connector continuity.
- If the wiring and pull-down path pass, test the proximity-detection input and charging control against the manufacturer's specifications.
Common fixes
- Repair circuit A wiring shorted to a higher-voltage circuit.
- Restore the open pull-down path or repair its connector terminals.
- Repair damaged inlet wiring or contacts causing an open circuit.
- Replace a failed proximity-detection element or repair the charging-control input if testing confirms a fault.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may not recognize the connector correctly, so charging may fail or stop unexpectedly. Confirm plug recognition and charge initiation before leaving the vehicle or depending on the available range.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
