What it means
The proximity detection circuit B (SAE J1772 PD signal) reports a high condition. Charging cable plug detection is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The J1772 proximity-detection (PD) circuit B helps the vehicle detect the charging plug at the inlet. The control module monitors this circuit for an abnormally high signal; a high reading can prevent reliable plug detection and charging.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Charge inlet contacts dirty
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine or charging-system warning light
- Charging may not start or may be interrupted
How to diagnose it
- Check the stored code and freeze-frame data, then see whether charging fails consistently or only with a particular cable.
- With the vehicle safely powered down and the cable unplugged, inspect inlet contacts for dirt, moisture, damage, or corrosion.
- Check the circuit B connector and wiring for loose pins, corrosion, chafing, or a short to a power feed.
- Use a scan tool to compare the reported PD circuit B state while connecting and removing a compatible cable.
- If the inlet and wiring look sound, test circuit B continuity and for an unintended connection to power using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and dry contaminated charge-inlet contacts using an approved method.
- Repair damaged or loose wiring and connector terminals in the PD circuit B.
- Replace a damaged charge inlet if its circuit B contacts cannot make reliable contact.
Can I keep driving?
If the plug is not detected reliably, charging may not start or may stop, so do not rely on the vehicle until you have a dependable charge. Avoid forcing or repeatedly wiggling the connector, which can worsen inlet damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
