What it means
The ECM detects a circuit fault on the hybrid/ev battery pack coolant control valve position sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
A position sensor reports how far battery pack coolant control valve A has moved, allowing the control module to check the valve’s operation. P0CE4 sets when the sensor circuit has an electrical fault that makes its reading unreliable, so the module may not know the valve position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Coolant control valve position sensor failed
- Damaged wiring or poor connector connection
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review available valve A position, command, and battery temperature readings for dropouts or missing feedback.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect the valve position sensor connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
- Use the manufacturer's wiring diagram to check the sensor circuit connections and look for opens, shorts, or a poor ground.
- If the circuit checks out, test the valve position sensor according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- After repairs, clear the code and confirm that position feedback changes plausibly as valve A is commanded through its range.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean the valve position sensor connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or a poor connection in the sensor circuit.
- Replace the valve position sensor if it fails the manufacturer's test.
- Correct a valve or linkage fault if it prevents the sensor from tracking movement.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving and charging demands modest because the module may limit power or charging when it cannot confirm valve position and battery cooling. Stop safely if a battery temperature warning or shutdown message appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
