What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the hybrid/ev battery pack coolant control valve position sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The position sensor on battery pack coolant control valve A reports how far the valve has moved. P0CE5 sets when that reading is electrically plausible but does not agree with the expected valve position or movement, so the module cannot rely on the feedback to confirm coolant routing.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor signal does not match the expected valve position
- Valve position sensor or linkage issue
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded valve A position with sensor feedback and battery temperature readings for the conditions that trigger the mismatch.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect the sensor connector, harness, valve linkage, and accessible valve movement for looseness or binding.
- Use scan-tool data or available output controls to observe whether position feedback tracks commanded changes across the valve's movement.
- If feedback fails to track movement, check the sensor and linkage alignment or sticking according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- After repair, clear the code and verify that valve A feedback follows commands during the prescribed test.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose connector or repair damaged valve position sensor wiring.
- Correct a misaligned or loose linkage if it causes the reported position mismatch.
- Free or replace a sticking valve that cannot reach its commanded position.
- Replace the position sensor if its reading remains out of range with proper valve movement.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy driving and charging because the module may limit output if it cannot confirm that coolant valve A reached the commanded position. Stop safely if a battery temperature warning, severe power reduction, or shutdown message appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
