What it means
The ECM detects a low fault on the hybrid/ev battery pack coolant control valve position sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The hybrid or EV battery coolant control valve routes coolant through the battery pack cooling loop. Its position sensor reports how far the valve has moved, and the ECM sets P0CE6 when the sensor signal is lower than expected, so the module cannot reliably confirm the valve position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and watch the battery coolant valve position reading on a scan tool to see when the low signal occurs.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect the valve sensor connector for corrosion, moisture, damaged pins, or a poor fit.
- Check the sensor signal wire and harness for a short to ground, especially where the wiring can rub or contact the vehicle body.
- Test the sensor circuit's supply, ground, and signal against the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
- If wiring and connections are sound, test the valve position sensor and valve movement using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor connector pins.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or other damaged wiring.
- Replace a faulty battery coolant valve position sensor.
- Replace the coolant control valve if its sensor or mechanism is not serviceable separately.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid demanding acceleration and stop driving if power is limited or a battery cooling warning appears; the vehicle may restrict operation, and unreliable valve feedback can compromise battery cooling. Arrange prompt diagnosis, especially before charging or driving far.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
