OBD-II fault code

P0CB1: Hybrid/EV Battery Temperature Sensor N Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The HV battery temperature sensor N reports a circuit intermittent/erratic fault. Cell-group temperature monitoring impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Sensor N monitors temperature at one area of the high-voltage battery, and the control module watches the signal for stable, plausible readings. This code sets when the N signal becomes intermittent or erratic, often because the connector is not seated, contact changes with vibration, or the ground reference is noisy.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and watch Sensor N live temperature alongside other battery readings for dropouts or sudden jumps.
  2. With the vehicle powered down per the manufacturer's instructions, inspect the N connector for incomplete seating, corrosion, or damaged terminals.
  3. Inspect the N harness and ground reference for looseness, chafing, or damage that could cause intermittent contact.
  4. Follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to monitor the N signal while checking accessible wiring and connectors for dropouts.
  5. If no connection fault is found, test Sensor N and its ground circuit, then the module input.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and secure the Sensor N connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded or damaged N connector terminals.
  • Repair a loose ground reference or damaged harness affecting Sensor N.
  • Replace Sensor N if its output remains erratic with stable wiring and connections.

Can I keep driving?

Unstable Sensor N data can trigger changing power or charging limits. Keep driving gentle and brief, and stop if the vehicle issues a stop warning or loses substantial power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
