OBD-II fault code

P0C91: Hybrid/EV Battery Temperature Sensor J Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The HV battery temperature sensor J reports a circuit intermittent/erratic fault. Cell-group temperature monitoring impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The HV battery temperature sensor J monitors one battery temperature channel, which the control module uses to manage pack operation and charging. This code sets when that circuit's signal is erratic or intermittently drops out rather than staying stable and plausible.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare live sensor J temperature with nearby battery readings for abrupt spikes, dropouts, or freezing.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the sensor J connector for incomplete seating, moisture, contamination, or damaged terminals.
  3. Inspect accessible sensor J wiring and harness supports for looseness, abrasion, or strain that may cause vibration-related contact loss.
  4. Monitor sensor J live data while checking the low-voltage harness and connector for intermittent signal changes using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Test sensor J circuit connections and ground reference against the manufacturer's specifications, then test the sensor if the wiring is sound.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and secure the sensor J connector.
  • Clean or repair intermittent connector contacts and ground connections.
  • Repair loose or damaged sensor J wiring.
  • Replace sensor J if it fails the manufacturer's tests.

Can I keep driving?

Intermittent temperature data can trigger reduced power or restricted charging without warning. Limit driving and avoid heavy acceleration; stop safely if power drops sharply or a battery warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
