What it means
The control module detected a high signal condition in the battery temperature sensor N circuit. The cause and vehicle response depend on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Sensor N measures temperature at its assigned area of the high-voltage battery, and the control module uses its signal to manage battery protection, power, and charging. This code sets when the N circuit signal is higher than expected; an open wire, failed sensor, poor connector contact, or short to voltage can cause it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or damaged sensor wiring
- Failed temperature sensor
- Loose or corroded connector
- Short to voltage
Symptoms
- Hybrid or EV system warning light
- Possible reduced power or charging limits
How to diagnose it
- Retrieve freeze-frame data and compare Sensor N's reported temperature with other battery channels to check for a fixed or implausible high reading.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect Sensor N's connector and harness for an open, loose pin, corrosion, or damage.
- Look for N signal wiring that may have rubbed through and contacted a voltage feed.
- Test the N circuit for an open and a short to voltage, then test the sensor using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the circuit and sensor pass, check the control module's N input and connections.
Common fixes
- Reseat the Sensor N connector and clean or repair corroded terminals.
- Repair an open or damaged wire in the N sensor circuit.
- Repair insulation damage that allows the N signal to contact voltage.
- Replace Sensor N if it fails the manufacturer's test.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may limit power or charging because it cannot rely on Sensor N's battery temperature data. Avoid demanding driving and follow any displayed warning that directs you to stop.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
