OBD-II fault code

P0BDF: Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor "E" Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on the drive motor inverter temperature sensor e circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Inverter temperature sensor E measures temperature at its monitored point in the drive motor inverter and sends that signal to the ECM. P0BDF sets when the E circuit signal is intermittent or erratic, such as from a loose connector or unstable ground reference, rather than consistently outside its range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and fault history for sensor E dropouts and note whether they occurred with vibration, load changes, or inverter heating.
  2. Inspect the E connector latch, terminals, ground path, and harness for movement, corrosion, or chafing.
  3. Watch sensor E live data while gently moving accessible wiring sections, using the manufacturer's safety procedure, and look for sudden dropouts.
  4. Test the E circuit's ground reference and connector contact stability using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the circuit remains stable, test sensor E for an intermittent output fault against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Seat and latch the E connector; clean or repair loose or corroded terminals.
  • Secure or repair harness sections that move or chafe and interrupt the E signal.
  • Repair an unstable ground reference in the E sensor circuit.
  • Replace sensor E if its output is erratic with a verified sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

A sudden signal dropout can prompt reduced motor power or limp mode, so avoid long trips and high-load driving until the fault is addressed. Stop safely if a hybrid-system warning appears with loss of power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
