OBD-II fault code

P0BD5: Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor "C" Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on the drive motor inverter temperature sensor c circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor inverter temperature sensor C monitors a specific point in the drive motor inverter so the ECM can control motor output and protect the electronics from heat. This code sets when the sensor C signal is intermittent or erratic, such as when a loose connector or unstable ground makes the reading jump unexpectedly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and graph sensor C live data to check for sudden jumps or dropouts compared with other drive motor inverter temperatures.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, confirm the sensor C connector is fully seated and inspect its terminals for corrosion or damage.
  3. Inspect the sensor C harness and ground reference for chafing, looseness, or movement-related damage.
  4. If the manufacturer's procedure permits, monitor sensor C while gently moving the harness to locate an intermittent contact.
  5. Test the sensor C ground, wiring continuity, and sensor response against the manufacturer's specification, then confirm the reading remains stable.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the drive motor inverter sensor C connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded terminals and restore the sensor C ground reference.
  • Repair harness damage or wiring that loses contact with movement.
  • Replace sensor C if its signal remains erratic after connector and wiring repairs.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid demanding driving because the vehicle may intermittently reduce motor power or enter a protective mode. Stop safely if power becomes unpredictable or the vehicle displays a shutdown warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
