OBD-II fault code

P0BDA: Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor "D" Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on the drive motor inverter temperature sensor d circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Inverter temperature sensor D measures temperature at its point in the drive motor inverter and sends the signal to the ECM. P0BDA sets when that D circuit signal becomes erratic or drops out intermittently, rather than staying consistently low or high, leaving the ECM without a dependable temperature reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and fault history for when the D reading became erratic, including whether it coincided with vibration, acceleration, or inverter heating.
  2. Inspect sensor D's connector for an incomplete latch, loose terminals, corrosion, or wiring that can move against nearby components.
  3. Monitor sensor D live data while gently checking accessible harness sections for a signal dropout, following the manufacturer's safety procedure.
  4. Check the D circuit's ground reference and connector contact stability for intermittent disturbance using the manufacturer's test method.
  5. If the wiring remains stable, test sensor D for intermittent output faults against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and latch the sensor D connector; clean or repair loose or corroded terminals.
  • Secure or repair wiring that moves, chafes, or loses contact with vibration.
  • Repair an unstable ground reference in the D sensor circuit.
  • Replace sensor D if its output remains intermittent with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving because the fault can cause sudden motor-power reduction or limp mode when the D signal drops out. Avoid high-speed or high-load trips, and stop safely if the vehicle warns of a hybrid-system fault or begins losing power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
