OBD-II fault code

P0BE4: Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor F Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on the drive motor inverter temperature sensor f circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Temperature sensor F monitors a part of the drive motor inverter, whose power electronics regulate current to the motor. The ECM watches the sensor F circuit for a stable, plausible signal. This code sets when that signal jumps or behaves erratically, often as a loose or poor connection changes with vibration.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review related inverter codes to see whether the intermittent fault coincided with vibration, load, or a change in temperature.
  2. Check sensor F live data for sudden jumps or dropouts while the vehicle is stationary and conditions are safe; compare it with other available inverter temperature readings.
  3. With the high-voltage system safely disabled, inspect the sensor F connector for incomplete seating, corrosion, loose terminals, or signs of movement.
  4. Inspect accessible sensor F wiring and ground-reference connections for chafing, strain, or looseness that could interrupt the signal under vibration.
  5. Have a qualified technician monitor the sensor F circuit while checking connector continuity and ground reference using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Seat and secure the sensor F connector.
  • Repair or replace damaged terminals that make intermittent contact.
  • Repair chafed or strained sensor F wiring and restore a sound ground reference.
  • Clear the code and confirm the sensor F reading remains stable during the conditions that previously triggered it.

Can I keep driving?

The fault may come and go, but inverter protection can still reduce motor power or trigger limp mode if the reading drops out. Avoid demanding acceleration and stop safely if the vehicle shows a shutdown warning or loses power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
