OBD-II fault code

P0BDC: Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor "E" Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit range/performance fault on the drive motor inverter temperature sensor e circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Inverter temperature sensor E measures temperature at its monitored point in the drive motor inverter. P0BDC sets when the E circuit's reading is electrically plausible but does not respond as expected or falls outside the calibrated range for operating conditions, so the ECM cannot rely on it for temperature control.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Sensor mounting displaced
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live data for sensor E alongside inverter operating conditions and other available temperature readings.
  2. Inspect sensor E's mounting and connector for displacement, poor seating, contamination, or wiring strain that could affect its thermal contact or signal.
  3. Check whether the E reading changes smoothly as the inverter warms and cools; compare its response with other temperature readings rather than assuming a fixed value is correct.
  4. Test the E sensor circuit and sensor response against the manufacturer's specification to separate sensor drift from a wiring fault.
  5. If circuit and sensor tests pass, check for a control-module or calibration issue using manufacturer-specific diagnostic information.

Common fixes

  • Correct sensor E mounting or seating if it has shifted from its intended position.
  • Clean and secure the E connector; repair damaged wiring or terminals found during inspection.
  • Replace sensor E if its response is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Investigate module or calibration faults only after the sensor and circuit pass testing.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may reduce motor torque or enter limp mode because the ECM cannot judge temperature E accurately. Avoid sustained high loads and stop safely if a hybrid warning escalates or power drops.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
