What it means
The BMS detects a circuit low fault on voltage sense channel L of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management system (BMS) reads the voltage of a cell group through battery voltage sense channel L. P0B74 sets when that channel’s circuit is detected below its expected range, so the BMS cannot rely on its cell-group reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to ground
- Open in sense wire
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and BMS live readings for channel L and neighbouring channels to see whether L is unusually low or drops out.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer’s service procedure, visually inspect channel L’s accessible low-voltage sense wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or moisture.
- Check whether the channel L connector is fully seated and its pins are clean and secure; high contact resistance can pull the reported signal low.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician test channel L wiring for a short to ground or an open, following the manufacturer’s isolation and measurement procedures.
- If the wiring and connections pass, compare channel L input and reported voltage at the battery monitoring module to identify a module-side fault.
Common fixes
- Clean and properly secure a corroded or loose channel L connector.
- Repair an open or damaged section of channel L sense wiring.
- Repair wiring that is shorted to ground, then verify the BMS reading.
- Replace or repair the battery monitoring module only if circuit tests confirm it is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid relying on electric assist or attempting long trips if power is reduced or charging is affected; the vehicle may enter limp mode or restrict charging because it cannot verify the channel L cell-group voltage. Arrange prompt diagnosis, and stop safely if a battery warning escalates or the vehicle behaves unpredictably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
