OBD-II fault code

P0B4D: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense D Circuit High

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit high fault on voltage sense channel D of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The BMS measures cell-group voltage through separate sense channels, and channel D has its own signal path. This code sets when channel D reads above the expected circuit range, making that cell-group voltage measurement unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense wire shorted to voltage
  2. Open or high-resistance connection in the sense circuit
  3. Fault in the battery voltage-sensing module

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review channel D live data beside neighboring cell-group readings to see whether the high signal is constant or occurs under particular conditions.
  2. With the vehicle shut down according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect channel D wiring for damage or contact with a voltage source.
  3. Check channel D connector pins for corrosion, looseness, or displacement that could interrupt the signal and make it appear high.
  4. Have a qualified technician isolate the high-voltage battery and test channel D for a short to voltage and for continuity using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the harness tests correctly, check whether the sensing module's channel D input agrees with scan data before considering module repair or replacement.

Common fixes

  • Repair channel D wiring that is shorted to a voltage source.
  • Secure or repair channel D connector pins that are loose, corroded, or displaced.
  • Repair an open or high-resistance section of the channel D sense circuit.
  • Repair or replace the voltage-sensing module if its channel D input remains faulty after circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid depending on electric power or charging until the high channel D reading is diagnosed; the vehicle may reduce power or enter limp mode. An unreliable battery measurement can prompt further operating restrictions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
