What it means
The BMS detects a circuit high fault on voltage sense channel M of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The BMS measures a cell group using battery voltage sense channel M. P0B7A sets when the channel M circuit is detected above its expected range, so that group’s reported voltage cannot be trusted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sense wire shorted to higher voltage
- Reference regulator overvoltage
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare live channel M voltage with adjacent channels to confirm whether the M reading is high or implausible.
- With the high-voltage system made safe under the manufacturer’s procedure, inspect channel M’s sense wiring and connectors for damaged insulation, corrosion, moisture, or contact with another circuit.
- Check channel M connector seating and terminal condition for poor contact that could distort the measured signal.
- Have a qualified hybrid technician check channel M for a short to a higher-voltage circuit and test its reference supply against the manufacturer’s specification.
- If wiring and supply checks pass, investigate the battery monitoring module’s channel M input for an internal fault.
Common fixes
- Reseat or clean a loose or corroded channel M connector.
- Repair damaged channel M wiring or insulation that permits contact with a higher-voltage circuit.
- Correct a reference supply fault if testing confirms it is overvoltage.
- Repair or replace the battery monitoring module only if testing isolates the fault to its channel M input.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid demanding acceleration or charging if the vehicle has reduced power or charging restrictions; the BMS may be unable to verify the channel M cell-group reading. Get the fault checked promptly because limp mode or further charging limits may follow.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
