OBD-II fault code

P0B3E: Hybrid/EV Battery Voltage Sense A Circuit High

What it means

The BMS detects a circuit high fault on voltage sense channel A of the high-voltage battery. Cell-group voltage measurement is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Voltage sense channel A measures a cell group's voltage in the high-voltage battery so the battery management system can manage charging and power. P0B3E sets when the channel A signal is above its expected range, which may indicate a wire exposed to a higher voltage, a reference supply problem, or a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sense wire shorted to higher voltage
  2. Reference regulator overvoltage
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare channel A's scan-tool value with other cell-group readings and related battery codes.
  2. Check whether channel A reports an abnormally high or implausible value and whether it changes with operating conditions.
  3. Inspect accessible channel A connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, or contact with another power circuit.
  4. Have the channel A circuit checked for a short to a higher voltage and the reference supply tested against the manufacturer's specification using its high-voltage safety procedure.
  5. If wiring and reference checks pass, test the battery voltage-sensing module and channel A measurement using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair channel A wiring shorted to a higher voltage.
  • Clean or repair corroded connector terminals and restore secure connections.
  • Repair a reference supply fault if testing confirms it is out of specification.
  • Replace or repair the battery voltage-sensing module if it fails testing.
  • Correct any verified battery cell-group issue according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Can I keep driving?

A high or unreliable channel A reading can lead the battery management system to limit power or charging. Avoid strenuous trips and arrange diagnosis promptly, particularly if a hybrid-system warning or reduced-power mode appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
