OBD-II fault code

P0B12: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Current Sensor B Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The control module detects an intermittent or erratic signal in the hybrid/EV battery pack current sensor B circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery pack current sensor B reports current flowing into or out of the hybrid or EV battery. The control module sets P0B12 when sensor B's signal changes erratically or drops out intermittently, rather than remaining consistent with battery operation and sensor A.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and watch live sensor B current alongside sensor A for sudden jumps or dropouts, noting when they occur.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, check that sensor B's connector is fully seated and inspect its terminals and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Check for related current-sensor or ground-reference codes that could indicate a shared electrical disturbance.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to inspect and test sensor B's ground and reference connections for unstable contact.
  5. If the manufacturer's procedure permits, monitor the signal while gently checking the accessible harness for vibration-related dropouts, then test the circuit against specification.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure sensor B's connector.
  • Clean or repair loose or corroded connector terminals.
  • Repair damaged wiring or an unstable ground or reference connection.
  • Replace current sensor B if its signal remains erratic after the circuit and connections are verified.

Can I keep driving?

Keep trips short and avoid relying on electric power or charging until the signal is stable, especially if the vehicle enters limp mode. Stop if propulsion becomes unpredictable, since intermittent current readings can cause sudden power restrictions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
