OBD-II fault code

P0ABA: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Voltage Sense A Circuit

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit fault on the hybrid/ev battery pack voltage sense a circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid battery voltage-sense A circuit carries a measurement used by the control system to assess battery-pack voltage for control and charging decisions. P0ABA sets when the module identifies a fault in that circuit, making the reading unreliable; the code does not alone prove the battery pack itself has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault in voltage-sense wiring or connector
  2. Fault in a cell-monitoring or battery control module
  3. Open or poor connection in the pack voltage-sense circuit

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan hybrid and battery modules, save freeze-frame data, and note any companion codes that identify a related sensing or communication fault.
  2. Review live data for the voltage-sense A reading and check whether it is missing, implausible, or inconsistent with related battery data.
  3. With the high-voltage system safely isolated by the manufacturer's procedure, inspect accessible voltage-sense A connectors and wiring for damage, loose fit, or corrosion.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check the voltage-sense A circuit for continuity and poor connections, comparing measurements with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit is sound, follow the manufacturer's tests to distinguish a cell-monitoring or battery control module fault from a sensing-circuit fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose voltage-sense A connector.
  • Repair damaged or open voltage-sense A wiring or terminals.
  • Replace a failed sensing component only after the circuit checks pass.
  • Repair or replace the battery control or cell-monitoring module if testing confirms it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

With reduced power or charging limitations possible, avoid long trips and routes where losing electric or hybrid assistance would be hazardous. Do not open or probe high-voltage battery wiring; if power is limited or charging fails, stop safely and arrange qualified hybrid-system service.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
