What it means
The control module detects a low signal in the control circuit for battery cooling fan 2. It sets the code when the circuit signal stays below its calibrated range during monitoring.
How it works
Battery cooling fan 2 moves air through the hybrid or EV battery pack when cooling is required. The control module monitors fan 2's control circuit and sets P0A84 when its signal is lower than the calibrated range. This low-circuit condition can result from a short to ground, a motor fault, a poor connection, or the control module.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to ground in fan wiring
- Faulty cooling fan motor
- Loose or corroded connector
- Faulty fan control module
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning light
- Battery cooling fan may not operate correctly
- Reduced power
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check fan 2 command and related live data to see when the low-circuit fault occurred.
- Inspect fan 2 and its battery air duct for blockage or physical damage that could overload or affect the motor.
- Check fan 2 wiring and connector for a short to ground, pin corrosion, looseness, or damaged insulation.
- With the vehicle safely powered down as directed by the manufacturer, test the fan 2 motor and circuit for continuity or shorts using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If wiring and motor tests are satisfactory, check the fan 2 control output and module operation against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean debris from fan 2 or its air duct.
- Secure or clean a loose or corroded fan 2 connector.
- Repair wiring shorted to ground or damaged insulation in the fan 2 control circuit.
- Replace the fan 2 motor or control module if testing identifies it as faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid heavy loads or hot conditions if the hybrid warning or reduced power appears, since fan 2 may not cool the battery properly. Stop if power drops sharply or additional battery warnings appear, and have the fault checked promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
