What it means
The control module detects an open or malfunction in the control circuit for battery cooling fan 1. It sets the code when the circuit response does not match the commanded fan operation.
How it works
Battery cooling fan 1 moves air through the hybrid or EV battery cooling path. The control module monitors the fan 1 control circuit and sets P0A81 when the circuit is open or its response does not match the commanded operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty battery cooling fan
- Open or damaged fan wiring
- Loose or corroded connector
- Blown fan circuit fuse
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning light
- Cooling fan does not run when needed
- Reduced power
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan battery cooling system codes to see whether the fault is limited to fan 1 or affects other fan circuits.
- Inspect the battery cooling intake and fan 1 area for debris, a blocked duct, or visible fan damage without opening the high-voltage battery enclosure.
- With the vehicle powered down as specified by its manufacturer, check fan 1 wiring and connectors for disconnection, corrosion, damage, or heat marks.
- Check the fan circuit fuse and relay if fitted, then use a scan tool to command fan 1 and observe whether it responds.
- Test fan 1 circuit continuity, power, and ground using the manufacturer’s wiring diagram and specifications before condemning the fan or control module.
Common fixes
- Clear debris blocking the fan 1 intake or duct.
- Reconnect or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged fan 1 connector or wire.
- Replace a blown fuse after checking for the cause of the open circuit.
- Replace battery cooling fan 1 if circuit tests are correct but the fan fails to operate.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving, especially in hot weather or under heavy load, because battery cooling fan 1 may not operate when needed. Stop if a battery temperature warning or reduced-power condition appears; continued overheating can damage the pack.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
