OBD-II fault code

P0A96: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Cooling Fan 2 Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The control module detects an open or malfunction in the control circuit for battery cooling fan 2. It sets the code when the circuit response does not match the commanded fan operation.

How it works

Battery cooling fan 2 moves air through the hybrid or EV battery cooling system when the control module commands it. P0A96 sets when the control circuit for fan 2 is open or its response does not match the command, so the fan may fail to run when battery cooling is needed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty battery cooling fan
  2. Open or damaged fan wiring
  3. Loose or corroded connector
  4. Blown fan circuit fuse

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system warning light
  • Cooling fan does not run when needed
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and fan command or status readings to confirm whether battery cooling fan 2 was requested when the fault occurred.
  2. Inspect fan 2's air intake and accessible fan assembly for debris, blockage, damaged blades, or signs that the fan is jammed.
  3. Check the fan 2 fuse and inspect its wiring and connectors for an open, loose fit, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Test fan 2 circuit continuity and power/control response using the manufacturer's procedure, comparing the result with fan 1 only where the vehicle's system design allows.
  5. If the circuit reaches the fan correctly but it does not respond, test and replace the fan assembly as indicated.

Common fixes

  • Clear debris from the fan 2 intake or repair a mechanically obstructed fan.
  • Replace a blown fan circuit fuse after checking for a short or overload cause.
  • Repair damaged fan 2 wiring or clean and secure its connector.
  • Replace battery cooling fan 2 if it fails the commanded operation test.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hot-weather driving, heavy loads, and long climbs until fan 2 operation is restored, since inadequate battery cooling can lead to reduced power and battery overheating. Stop if a hybrid-system warning or power reduction appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
