OBD-II fault code

P0A97: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Cooling Fan 2 Performance/Stuck Off

What it means

The control module detects that battery cooling fan 2 is not providing the expected cooling, or is stuck off. It sets the code when fan operation does not meet the monitored command or performance threshold.

How it works

Battery cooling fan 2 moves air through part of the hybrid or EV battery pack to help control its temperature. The control module compares fan 2's commanded operation with its monitored response and sets this code when the fan is not delivering expected cooling or appears not to be running.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty cooling fan motor
  2. Blocked fan or air duct
  3. Fan wiring or connector fault
  4. Faulty fan control module

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system warning light
  • Cooling fan does not run when needed
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check battery temperature and fan-command data to see when fan 2 failed to meet the request.
  2. With the vehicle off, inspect fan 2's intake, outlet, and duct for dust, debris, or obstructions that could restrict airflow.
  3. Inspect fan 2's accessible wiring and connectors for looseness, corrosion, damage, or signs of overheating.
  4. Use a scan tool's fan test, if available for the vehicle, to check whether fan 2 responds to a command and compare its operation with other battery fans.
  5. If airflow is still weak, have the fan motor and control-module output tested using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clear debris from fan 2's intake and duct.
  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged fan 2 connector or wiring.
  • Replace a fan 2 motor that fails its operational test.
  • Repair or replace the fan control module if its output fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration, towing, and long trips until the battery cooling fault is checked; reduced cooling can lead to restricted hybrid power or battery temperature problems. Stop safely if a hybrid-system warning escalates or the vehicle limits power, and do not open the high-voltage battery enclosure.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
