What it means
The current sensor A of the 14V DC/DC converter module reports a circuit fault. 12V system current measurement is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The 14-volt power module uses current sensor A to measure current in the DC/DC converter's 12-volt supply system. The control module checks whether the sensor circuit can provide a usable current reading. P0A86 indicates a circuit fault that makes that measurement unreliable, which can affect charging control.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Current sensor failed
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- 12-volt charging warning light
- Weak or discharged 12-volt battery
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and read the 14-volt module codes and live current-sensor A data to see whether the reading is missing or implausible.
- Check the 12-volt battery condition and charging warnings, since an unreliable current reading can coincide with a weak or discharged battery.
- Inspect current sensor A's connector and wiring for loose pins, corrosion, chafing, or damage.
- Using the manufacturer's wiring information, test the sensor circuit and its power, ground, and signal connections.
- If circuit checks pass, test current sensor A and the 14-volt power module using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure the current sensor A connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or faulty circuit connections.
- Replace current sensor A if its output fails the manufacturer's test.
- Repair or replace the 14-volt power module if it fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only as needed if the 12-volt charging warning is on or the battery is weak; the vehicle may lose electrical power or fail to restart. Avoid long trips and have the charging system checked promptly, stopping if warning lights multiply or electrical functions fail.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
