What it means
The control module detects that battery cooling fan 1 is not providing the expected cooling, or is stuck off. It sets the code when fan operation does not meet the monitored command or performance threshold.
How it works
Battery cooling fan 1 is expected to provide airflow through the battery cooling path when the control system commands it. P0A82 sets when fan 1 is stuck off or its cooling performance does not meet the monitored expectation, even if the circuit is not detected as open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty cooling fan motor
- Blocked fan or air duct
- Fan wiring or connector fault
- Faulty fan control module
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning light
- Battery cooling fan does not run
- Reduced power
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan battery cooling codes to determine whether the problem is specific to fan 1 or part of a broader cooling fault.
- Inspect fan 1’s intake and duct for debris, blockage, or physical obstruction that could prevent airflow or fan movement.
- Use a scan tool to command fan 1 and check whether it starts and moves air; note any unusual noise or intermittent operation.
- Inspect fan 1 wiring, connectors, and any separate fan control module for damage, looseness, or corrosion with the vehicle safely powered down as specified by its manufacturer.
- Test fan operation and control signals against the manufacturer’s procedures to distinguish a weak or stuck fan from a wiring or control-module fault.
Common fixes
- Remove debris or obstruction from the fan 1 intake and air duct.
- Repair loose or damaged fan 1 wiring or connectors.
- Replace battery cooling fan 1 if it does not run or provide airflow despite correct circuit operation.
- Repair or replace the fan control module if testing confirms it fails to command fan 1.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy loads and long trips, particularly in hot weather, because battery pack cooling may be inadequate. Stop safely if a battery temperature warning or reduced-power condition develops to prevent further overheating.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
