OBD-II fault code

P0A80: Replace Hybrid/EV Battery Pack

What it means

The hybrid battery management system has determined that the battery pack must be replaced. Often set after persistent cell imbalance, capacity loss or repeated thermal events.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid battery management system monitors the high-voltage pack, including differences in cell or module behavior and signs of capacity loss. P0A80 sets when the system determines that pack replacement is required, often after persistent imbalance, declining capacity, or repeated thermal events; the code does not by itself identify which pack component has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Battery pack replacement required
  2. Persistent cell imbalance

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool capable of reading hybrid battery data to record freeze-frame information, pack warnings, and cell or module imbalance indicators.
  2. Review available battery temperature and capacity data for repeated thermal events or a persistent imbalance, following the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  3. Inspect accessible low-voltage connectors and battery cooling intake areas for looseness, damage, or blockage without opening the high-voltage pack.
  4. Have the hybrid battery management system and pack evaluated against the manufacturer's specification to confirm whether the pack has reached its replacement threshold.
  5. If the warning is accompanied by reduced power or charging problems, follow the vehicle's safety instructions and arrange qualified hybrid-system diagnosis.

Common fixes

  • Clear an obstructed battery cooling intake if inspection confirms airflow is restricted.
  • Repair an identified low-voltage connector or wiring fault affecting battery monitoring.
  • Replace the hybrid battery pack when testing confirms the replacement condition.
  • Recheck battery balance, temperature behavior, and charging operation after repair.

Can I keep driving?

Because reduced power or limp mode can limit acceleration, avoid fast roads and situations where you need to merge quickly; stop somewhere safe if the vehicle cannot maintain a safe speed. Arrange prompt hybrid-system service, since charging may fail or electric range may continue to fall.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
