OBD-II fault code

P0A0F: Hybrid Engine Failed to Start

What it means

The hybrid control system commanded an internal combustion engine start that did not complete within the expected time. Causes range from low 12V supply to fuel, ignition or starter issues.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The hybrid control system requests the combustion engine to start when operating conditions require it, such as when the engine is needed for power or battery charging. P0A0F sets when the engine does not complete that start within the allowed time, which may reflect weak 12-volt power, an ignition or starter problem, or insufficient hybrid battery charge.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Weak 12V auxiliary battery
  2. Starter or ignition system fault
  3. HV battery state of charge insufficient

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid system warning light on
  • Engine may crank but fail to start
  • Reduced power or failure to enter READY mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and all engine and hybrid codes to see whether the failed start coincided with low battery charge, cold conditions, or another recorded fault.
  2. Check the 12-volt battery condition and connections first, since low auxiliary voltage can disrupt engine starting and hybrid control.
  3. Check fuel level and inspect accessible ignition and engine-start wiring for loose connections or damage.
  4. Use live data to review hybrid battery state of charge and engine start requests, then compare the reported values with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If power supply, fuel, and visible connections are sound, test the starter and ignition systems using the vehicle's service procedure.

Common fixes

  • Charge or replace a weak 12-volt auxiliary battery and clean secure its connections.
  • Restore adequate fuel if the tank is low.
  • Repair a failed starter, ignition component, or related wiring confirmed by testing.
  • Address a hybrid battery charge or control fault if scan data and testing identify it as the reason the engine start was not completed.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle will not enter READY, stalls, or has reduced power, do not drive it in traffic because it may lose propulsion. Repeated failed starts can drain the 12-volt battery and leave the vehicle unable to start.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
