Red lights

Hybrid system warning

What it means

This warning indicates a fault in the hybrid system or its controls. Red generally signals a serious problem: stop safely and follow the owner's manual; the exact colour and behaviour vary by manufacturer.

What the symbol looks like: A vehicle outline or drivetrain symbol, often with an exclamation mark or the word “HYBRID,” indicates a hybrid system warning; the design varies by model.

Why it comes on

  • Fault in the hybrid control system
  • Problem with the inverter or power electronics
  • Traction battery fault or overheating
  • Motor-generator or wiring fault

What to do

  1. Pull over somewhere safe as soon as you can.
  2. Check the owner's manual for the warning's model-specific instructions.
  3. If the vehicle is smoking, unusually hot, or making unusual noises, move away and call emergency services if there is a fire.
  4. Arrange assistance or have the vehicle inspected; do not touch high-voltage components.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving with a red hybrid-system warning unless the manual specifically directs otherwise. Avoid restarting or attempting repairs if there are signs of overheating or damage.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
