OBD-II fault code

P0A5B: Generator Current Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The generator current sensor circuit signal is below the expected range. This code identifies a low signal and does not specify the fault location or a diagnostic procedure.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator current sensor sends a signal used by the hybrid control module to track generator current. P0A5B sets when that signal falls below the expected range, which can make the module underestimate or lose its current reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid performance
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check live generator-current data to see whether the low reading is constant or occurs only during a particular operating condition.
  2. With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's safety procedure, inspect the sensor connector and signal-wire route for corrosion, damage, or a wire touching ground.
  3. Check connector pin fit and corrosion, since poor contact can pull the sensor signal away from its expected level.
  4. Measure the sensor signal and its circuit continuity using the manufacturer's procedure to identify a short to ground or excessive contact resistance.
  5. If the signal wiring and connector pass inspection, test the sensor itself for an internal short before considering replacement.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose connector terminals.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or damaged insulation.
  • Replace a current sensor confirmed to have an internal short.
  • Clear the code and confirm generator-current data responds normally during operation.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced hybrid power or a reduced-power mode may occur, so avoid fast acceleration, heavy loads, and trips where losing power would be hazardous. If the vehicle enters reduced-power mode or displays a hybrid-system warning, stop safely and have the fault diagnosed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
