OBD-II fault code

P0A59: Generator Current Sensor Circuit

What it means

The current sensor of the generator reports a circuit fault. Current measurement is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator current sensor measures current flowing through the generator so the hybrid control system can manage generation and inverter operation. The module monitors this sensor circuit for faults that make the current reading unreliable. A circuit problem can lead to reduced hybrid performance or a restricted operating mode.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Current sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid performance
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and compare generator current readings with generator operation and commanded output.
  2. Check for related generator, inverter, or hybrid-system codes that may indicate a shared supply, ground, or communication fault.
  3. With the high-voltage system made safe according to service information, inspect the generator current-sensor connector and accessible wiring for damage, corrosion, or poor seating.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check the sensor's power, ground, and signal circuits for opens, shorts, or poor connections against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring checks pass, test the generator current sensor and compare its output with scan-tool data using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring in the generator current-sensor circuit.
  • Clean, secure, or repair a loose or corroded sensor connector.
  • Correct a failed sensor power or ground connection.
  • Replace the generator current sensor if testing confirms it has failed.
  • Repair an inverter or generator monitoring fault if the sensor and wiring test correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Hybrid performance may be reduced and the vehicle may enter a restricted-power mode. Avoid long trips if power is limited, and stop safely if the vehicle loses power or displays a shutdown warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
