OBD-II fault code

P0A5A: Generator Current Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The current sensor of the generator reports a circuit range/performance fault. Current measurement is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator current sensor lets the hybrid control module estimate current flowing through the generator. This code sets when the reported current is implausible or outside the calibrated performance range, so the module cannot rely on the measurement even if the signal is not simply stuck low or high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Current sensor offset drifted
  2. Magnetic offset from nearby parts
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid performance
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare generator current with commanded operation and related hybrid data to see when the reading becomes implausible.
  2. Check the generator current sensor and nearby components for incorrect positioning, damage, or a magnetic source that could bias the measurement.
  3. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, chafing, or routing changes that could affect the reading.
  4. Use live data to compare the sensor reading with other available current or power measurements while the vehicle operates under the conditions in the freeze frame.
  5. If the installation and wiring are sound, test sensor output and calibration against the manufacturer's specification before replacing the sensor.

Common fixes

  • Correct sensor positioning or remove an unintended magnetic influence nearby.
  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace a current sensor that has drifted outside its calibration range.
  • Recheck hybrid current readings after repair to confirm they track commanded operation.

Can I keep driving?

Because the hybrid system may limit power or enter reduced-power mode, avoid demanding acceleration and do not rely on normal hybrid performance. If power drops sharply or the vehicle warns of a hybrid-system fault, stop somewhere safe and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
