OBD-II fault code

P0A0D: High Voltage System Interlock Circuit High

What it means

The HV interlock signal voltage is above threshold, indicating short to battery or unexpected continuity loss.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The high-voltage interlock loop has a signal monitored by the hybrid control system to verify that protected connectors are secure. P0A0D sets when that signal is higher than the expected range, which can result from a short to a voltage source or an abnormal connection in the interlock circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to battery on interlock
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Hybrid system warning light on
  • Vehicle may not enter READY mode
  • Possible reduced or unavailable hybrid power

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check for related hybrid electrical codes to learn whether the high signal occurred with other circuit faults.
  2. Review live interlock circuit status and signal data with a scan tool, if supported, to confirm that the high condition is current.
  3. With the system handled according to the manufacturer's safety procedure, inspect accessible interlock wiring for pinching near power feeds and connectors for corrosion or terminal damage.
  4. Check wiring diagrams and connector views for the interlock signal route, then have the circuit checked for a short to voltage using the specified isolation procedure.
  5. If wiring and connectors pass, have the hybrid control module and interlock components evaluated against manufacturer diagnostic steps.

Common fixes

  • Repair a pinched wire that is contacting a voltage source.
  • Repair or replace a damaged or corroded interlock connector.
  • Replace a failed interlock circuit component if testing confirms it produces the high signal.
  • Repair the control module circuit only after wiring and component checks rule out external causes.

Can I keep driving?

The warning may be present even if the vehicle still drives, but an interlock fault can compromise high-voltage safety monitoring. Limit driving and arrange prompt diagnosis; do not touch the high-voltage system.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
